Students at Sevenoaks Senior College celebrated NAIDOC Week with Aboriginal dancing, traditional food cooking and tasting and by making and giving away traditional head bands.
The Aboriginal students at Sevenoaks are encouraged to be proud of their heritage and to celebrate it. Every year Sevenoaks celebrates NAIDOC Week so that students and staff can acknowledge and share Aboriginal culture.
Boys from the Sevenoaks Clontarf Football Academy performed traditional dreamtime dances for the school. They also performed at East Kenwick Primary School and in August this year they will fly to Melbourne and perform for the staff of Cricket Australia at the MCG.
Kayleen Hayward, our Aboriginal Literacy and Numeracy Teacher, stated that she was “proud to be a Noongar and to teach others about my people’s history and traditions. However, now is the time for the young people to take on that responsibility and be proud of who they are.”
NAIDOC Week is happening around Australia from the 6 to 13 of July. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.
