Dear Parents/Caregivers/Students,

I am writing to update you on the recent announcement by the Minister for Education and Training regarding the community consultation on the current structure of public schools in the Cannington and Maddington area.

Thank you to those of you who came to the community forum at Sevenoaks Senior College last Wednesday. It was pleasing to see the support of our valued community.

At the forum, representatives from the Department of Education gave an overview of the current structure and the two options that have been presented. They highlighted the preferred model of secondary schooling is to, where possible, provide seamless years 7 to 12 secondary schooling in one school. Transition points for students were noted as a concern. Community members were given the opportunity to ask questions. Many community members asked clarifying questions and also expressed their support of the current model. There were questions regarding infrastructure which could not be specifically answered at this stage but that the buildings and facilities would be suitable for the option decided on. It was indicated that the timeframe for any change is likely to be two to three years away.

The consultation will take place over 8 weeks. Our College community is encouraged to complete the survey which is now live on the Department of Education website. Please follow this link to complete the survey. If you do not have access to a computer, you are able to come into the College to complete a hard copy of the survey. In addition, the Department of Education is working on providing fact sheets in other languages and hard copies of the survey also in other languages.

There is a community forum on Tuesday 1 September at 6 pm in the Sevenoaks SC gymnasium for the Cannington Community College school community. If you would like to attend please register your interest at Cannington.cc@education.wa.edu.au

Please note that the survey closes on 15 September at 5 pm and it is important that the community takes the opportunity to have a say in the future of public schooling in our area. Please see this link for the factsheet or here to see the translatable factsheet.

As you are aware Sevenoaks Senior College has a 20-year history of strong success in senior secondary schooling for students across the metropolitan area, offering a broad range of individual pathways in a young adult environment. Please be assured that we will continue to provide the best quality education for our students at this time and students will not be disadvantaged. This is a critical time for our year 12 students in what has been a difficult year and all the staff are ensuring that students are supported in the last few weeks of their education.

If you have any questions regarding the consultation and/or survey please do not hesitate to contact me at the College, 9356 4900.

Yours sincerely

Katie Edwards
